During the Summer, the Discovery Hall Programs offers 4 one-week camps to middle school students.  During this time, students live on campus and participate in marine related, field-based activities on Dauphin Island allowing them to experience life on a barrier island.  The program is designed to encourage students' interest in science and enhance their understanding of the marine environment.

Overview
The middle school summer camp is a fun filled week, introducing the student to the marine environment through field activities.
    
Activities include:  
  • Set up a salt water aquarium
  • Tour of Shell Mounds and Fort Gaines
  • Marsh Trip - put out crab traps, seining, etc
  • Estuarium
  • Visit Sand Island

 

  • Maritime forest
  • Trawling on A. E. Verrill
  • Plankton activity/ seining
  • Fishing on pier/ Beach combing
  • Edible lab

 

Students will also choose from the following activities:
 
  • Arts and crafts
  • Volleyball
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Shopping
  • Pool
  • Games in the dorm or classroom
  • Seining at Sea Lab beach
