Academic Year Workshops
LEARNING OCEAN SCIENCE THROUGH OCEAN
EXPLORATION
Funded by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean
Exploration. Registration is required and space is
limited. This is the first of a two-part workshop
series. Educators who attend both full-day
workshops will receive a $100 stipend. Bring the
excitement of current ocean science discoveries to your
students using the new Learning Ocean Science through
Ocean Exploration curriculum and a CD-ROM of the Ocean
Explorer website (http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov)
from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Dates: September 13, 2008 (Part 1) and March 14, 2009 (Part

Marine Application of Science and Technology
The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is
introducing an exciting teacher workshop titled "MAST"
(Marine Applications of Science and Technology). This
workshop introduce
|
 |
the educator to hands-on application of math,
technology, and science using coastal Alabama resources.
Teachers will explore disciplines as varied as oceanography,
salt marsh ecology, climatology and fisheries management.
This program is designed to provide teachers with a means of
linking mathematics, technology and science utilizing the
marine environment as a tool. The oceans provide an
exciting avenue for learning by providing a mystery of the
unknown and the challenge of exploration. Each
participant will receive a GPS receiver for use in the
classroom. Workshop registration begins in January. |
Requirements for this
workshop include:
Alabama 6th - 12th grade math or science teacher. Dates: TBA
*Credit hours available: 3 semester hours graduate
credit.
Funding to be provided by the Alabama State
Department of Education under Titles II and V of the No
Child Left Behind Act of 2001. |

The Delta
Explore
the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, the second largest delta in the
continental U.S. Travel
to and learn firsthand about its submerged grass beds,
marshes, and cypress-gum swamps, rich with plant and animal life.
Visit the Mississippian Indian Mounds at Bottle Creek and
look for the Red-bellied Turtle that inhabits the fresh to
brackish waters of the delta which is found nowhere else in
the world. Find resources and classroom ideas for teaching your students
about the importance of the delta, as well as its rich
biodiversity. Dates: TBA
*Credit hours available: 2 semester hours of graduate credit

Beaches,
Birds and Barrier Islands
|
 |
Join us for a "three island tour" of the Gulf
Coast's most beautiful barrier islands. Enjoy the pristine
environment of Petit Bois Island, bird watching on Gaillard Island, beachcombing on Dauphin
Island, and many other exciting activities. Classroom application and
curriculum materials will be provided for all grade levels. Dates: TBA
*Credit hours available: 3 semester hours graduate
credit.

Sharks and Rays
Few
animals instill fear in people like sharks. Come and
join us to set the records straight about these valuable,
beautiful, and misunderstood fish. Learn the ins and
outs of shark biology as we start 150 miles inland searching
for ancient fossilized shark species right here in Alabama.
Then proceeding south to Dauphin Island, we will go
long-lining for live sharks on our research vessel. All the
while we will learn practical ways to weave sharks into
classroom curriculum through a shark dissection, interactive
classroom materials, and scientific talks from area shark
biologists. Dates: TBA
*Credit hours available: 3
semester hours graduate credit.

Education Excellence
The COSEE: CGOM Scientist/Teacher Institutes are funded by
the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Navy, in
cooperation with The University of Southern
Mississippi-Marine Education Center (USM-MEC), the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab (DISL), Louisiana Universities Marine
Consortium (LUMCON), the University of Florida/Florida Sea
Grant College Program, and Mississippi State University (MSU).
The Program invites 12 teachers and five scientists from
Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas to
participate in a three week (five days in residence for
field activities and 10 days involved in distance-learning
spread over a three-week timeframe), three-semester hour,
graduate course. The content focuses on coastal
processes, habitats and organisms, and marine technology.
The course may also be taken for continuing education units.
The
Institute establishes a working partnership between marine
and ocean scientists and teachers, giving each the
opportunity to share information and ideas about scientific
research and science education. The grant provides room and
board, a wealth of ocean sciences education materials,
instruction, and a stipend for each participant. 5th -
9th Grade teachers from the five gulf states are eligible to
apply for admission to this program.
Dates: TBA
*Credit hours available:
3 semester hours graduate credit.

class-room activities? Take a ride into the
Gulf of Mexico on a research vessel collecting
animals for your classroom. Visit a near-by
uninhabited barrier island.
*Credit hours available: 3 semester hours of
graduate credit. |
Submerged Grassbeds of the Northern
Gulf of Mexico
Snorkel rock jetties and seagrasses.
Dig the surf zone and gently walk the salt marsh. Explore
the intertidal habitats to subtidal habitats of the
Northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The settings will be St. Andrews
Bay and St. Joseph Bay, Florida. Objectives are to examine
and compare sandy beaches, rock jetties, muddy marshes and
