Learning Ocean Science Through Ocean Exploration (NOAA)

Dates: September 25, 2010 (Part 1) and February 26, 2011 (Part 2) 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.
Deadline for Registration: September 10, 2010
Tuition: FREE. Educators who attend both full-day workshops will receive a $100 stipend.
Bring the excitement of current ocean science discoveries to your students using the new Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration curriculum and a CD-ROM of the Ocean Explorer website (http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov) from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Travel to and learn firsthand about the Mobile Delta's submerged grass beds, marshes, and cypress-gum swamps, rich with plant and animal life. Find resources and classroom ideas for teaching your students about the importance of the Mobile Delta, as well as its rich biodiversity.

Fins, Fishes and Fisheries

Seafood business is well-known and booming, but how is it all handled? Come to Dauphin Island and learn about fisheries management and the sustainability of the seafood industry. Learn about current fisheries research, trawl in Mobile Bay and offshore areas, visit local aquaculture facilities and practice being a fisheries manager. Workshop registration begins in February.

Come to Dauphin Island and learn what habitat restoration is all about. Gain first-hand experience with oyster reefs, sea grass beds and salt marshes by visiting these habitats locally. Learn about the science of restoration ecology and adapt the information to present in your classroom. Workshop registration begins in February.

Marine Technology
Dates: July 18-21, 2011

Funded by the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA)

Bring current research technology into your classroom through this exciting workshop. See first-hand how to use electronic oceanographic data collection, such as CTD and side-scan sonar, and learn how to interpret your findings. Introduce your students to a classroom-friendly geographic information system, such as ARC-GIS, and use it for fun activities like tracking tagged wildlife. Learn how to build and operate a ROV, and explore the science behind handheld GPS. Throughout this workshop, you will collect valuable resources and lesson plans to take back to your classroom to share with your students.

*This workshop is open to middle school teachers in the state of Alabama, and requires a three-year commitment from all participants. You must be able to take your students into the field approximately once/month for water sampling. Only two teachers per school may apply. If you are interested in participating in this workshop, please contact the DHP Registrar for more details and the application.
