LEARNING OCEAN SCIENCE THROUGH OCEAN
EXPLORATION (NOAA)
Dates: September 26, 2009 (Part 1) and March 6, 2010 (Part
2) 8:30 am - 3:30 pm. Mandatory attendance at both workshops is required
Deadline for Registration: September 21, 2009
Tuition: FREE. Educators who attend both full-day workshops will receive a $100 stipend.
Bring the
excitement of current ocean science discoveries to your
students using the new Learning Ocean Science through
Ocean Exploration curriculum and a CD-ROM of the Ocean
Explorer website (http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov)
from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Emphasize hands-on application of math,
technology, and science using coastal Alabama resources.
Disciplines include oceanography,
salt marsh ecology, climatology and fisheries management. Each participant will receive a GPS receiver for use in the
classroom. Workshop registration begins in February.
Requirements for this workshop include:
Alabama 6th - 12th grade math or science teacher
*Credit hours available: 3 semester hours graduate
credit.

Centers for Ocean Sciences
Education Excellence: Central Gulf of Mexico

Funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Navy, in cooperation with The University of Southern Mississippi-Marine Education Center (USM-MEC), the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL), Loyola University of New Orleans (LUNO), the University of Florida/Florida Sea Grant College Program, and Mississippi State University (MSU). |
The Program invites 12 in-service and pre-service teachers of grades 4-12 and five scientists to
participate in a three week (five days in residence for
field activities and 10 days involved in distance-learning
spread over a three-week timeframe), three-semester hour,
graduate course. The workshop focuses on coastal
processes, habitats and organisms, and marine technology.
COSEE:CGOM establishes a working partnership between marine
and ocean scientists and teachers, giving each the
opportunity to share information and ideas about scientific
research and science education. Educators will receive a wealth of ocean sciences education materials,
instruction, and a stipend for each participant.
Requirements for this workshop include: Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas teachers 4th - 12th grade science

Learn how we're all connected to the coast, no matter where we live. Activities include trawling in Mobile Bay; visiting barrier islands; collecting specimens for your classroom. Educators will receive a 300 page
curriculum workbook.

join us to set the records straight about these valuable,
beautiful, and misunderstood fish. We'll explore inland Alabama for shark fossils and go long-lining for live sharks in the Gulf of Mexico. Learn practical ways to weave sharks into classroom curriculum through a shark dissection, interactive classroom materials, and scientific talks from area shark biologists.

Explore
the intertidal habitats to subtidal habitats of the
Northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The settings will be St. Andrews
Bay and St. Joseph Bay, Florida. Objectives are to examine
and compare sandy beaches, rock jetties, and swaying seagrasses.
